What Does “24/7 Crisis Services” Actually Mean?

Crisis doesn’t follow a schedule.

It doesn’t wait until Monday morning, stay within business hours, or take a break for the weekend. For someone experiencing domestic violence or sexual assault, the need for help can come at any time—early in the morning, late at night, on a holiday, or in the middle of an ordinary afternoon.

That’s why YWCA North Central Indiana provides 24/7 crisis services.

But what does “24/7” actually mean?

It means that when someone reaches out, there is someone here to listen.

It means a person experiencing a crisis doesn't have to wait until the next business day to talk with someone who understands.

It means support is available when someone needs help thinking through their options, making a safety plan, finding emergency shelter, or simply having someone say, “You’re not alone.”

Crisis doesn't always look the way we expect.

Someone may call because they have just experienced violence. Someone else may be afraid to return home. A parent may be worried about keeping their children safe. Another person may not even be sure whether what they are experiencing is abuse—they just know something isn't right.

There is no single way to experience a crisis, and there is no single right time to ask for help.

Our crisis support staff and advocates meet people where they are, without judgment, and help them identify the next step that feels safest for them.

24/7 means more than answering a phone.

Crisis services are about connection, safety, and support.

At YWCA North Central Indiana, our crisis services can connect individuals and families with resources and support including emergency shelter, advocacy, counseling, safety planning, and other services designed to help them move from crisis toward stability.

Sometimes the first step is simply talking.

Sometimes it is finding a safe place to stay.

Sometimes it is making a plan for what comes next.

Whatever that first step looks like, no one should have to navigate it alone.

There is no “perfect” time to ask for help.

People sometimes wait to reach out because they aren't sure their situation is serious enough, they don't know what they need, or they worry they will be judged.

You don't have to have everything figured out before asking for support.

You don't have to know exactly what to say.

And you don't have to wait for a crisis to become an emergency.

24/7 means we are here whenever you are ready to reach out.

Because safety shouldn't have office hours.
