Summer at YWCA: Making Room for Fun, Learning, and New Memories
Summer is a season of longer days, sunshine, and a little more time to simply be a kid.
For families staying at YWCA North Central Indiana, summer can also bring a change in routine. With school out, children have more time on their hands, and families may be navigating a new environment while working toward stability and a fresh start.
That’s why creating opportunities for fun, connection, learning, and just being a kid matters so much.
This summer, children and families staying with us have been able to enjoy a variety of activities and experiences designed to make the season feel a little brighter.
Learning, Playing, and Growing Together
This summer, children staying at YWCA had the opportunity to spend time with the Notre Dame Women’s Basketball team, who welcomed our young residents for a special basketball clinic.
Our partnership with the team means so much to YWCA North Central Indiana. Their players are not only talented athletes, but wonderful role models who show our children the importance of teamwork, confidence, perseverance, and believing in themselves.
For the kids, it was a chance to get active, learn something new, and have fun with some incredible women who are making a difference both on and off the court.
We are so grateful to the Notre Dame Women’s Basketball team for continuing to show up for the families we serve and for being such valued members of our community.
Keeping young minds growing
Summer reading programs have also helped children keep their minds active while school is out.
A good book can take you anywhere — especially when life feels uncertain. Reading gives children a chance to explore new places, discover new ideas, and enjoy a quiet moment of their own.
Keeping children connected to learning during the summer can also help them feel prepared and confident when it's time to head back to school.
Making memories together
Some of the best summer memories don't require much at all.
A picnic outside. A meal cooked on the grill. Time spent laughing together. An afternoon enjoying the sunshine.
Our outdoor picnic and grill-out gave families an opportunity to step away from the everyday stresses they may be carrying and simply enjoy time together.
For families experiencing a difficult season, those ordinary moments can be incredibly meaningful.
Because childhood doesn't stop during hard times
When a family comes to YWCA, safety and stability are at the center of everything we do. But children need more than a safe place to stay. They need opportunities to play, learn, explore, connect, and make happy memories, too.
That's why these summer experiences matter.
A basketball camp. A new favorite book. A meal shared outside. An afternoon of laughter.
They may seem like small things, but they help create a sense of normalcy and give children space to experience the simple joys of summer.
At YWCA North Central Indiana, we're grateful to everyone who helps make these moments possible — our volunteers, community partners, donors, and staff who continue to show up for the families we serve.
Because every child deserves a summer filled with opportunities to learn, play, grow, and make memories.
