“YWCA North Central Indiana is honored and humbled to be one of 384 organizations to receive a gift from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. We are so very proud that of all the organizations doing incredible work to help others, Ms. Scott chose our association and mission to celebrate with a 2 million dollar donation. It is a historic moment for us. This donation represents the largest single gift since we started work in our community in 1903.
When first notified of the donation, I was overcome with gratitude and joy while thinking of the women and children whose lives will change for the better because of Ms. Scott’s generosity. I also immediately thought of the YWCA team of employees and volunteers whose dedication and commitment to help others has never wavered during this most challenging year.
In her statement announcing the gifts (which you can read in full by clicking here), Ms. Scott outlined the rigorous process that went into determining which organizations would receive funds. It began with over 6,400 organizations and ended with 384 organizations identified to receive gifts. Among other criteria, they considered what impact organizations had in the past, their ability to have an impact in the future, and their leadership team’s experience level and effectiveness. She summed up her decision to make gifts to specific organizations with this statement.
“These 384 carefully selected teams have dedicated their lives to helping others, working and volunteering and serving real people face-to-face at bedsides and tables, in prisons and courtrooms and classrooms, on streets and hospital wards and hotlines and frontlines of all types and sizes, day after day after day. They help by delivering vital services, and the profound encouragement felt each time a person is seen, valued, and trusted by another human being. This kind of encouragement has a special power when it comes from a stranger, and it works its magic on everyone.”
As a result of this powerful endorsement, we are renewed in our efforts to eliminate racism and empower women and inspired to do even more! We will pause for just a moment to celebrate this breathtaking moment but then soon begin the process of determining how this gift can help fulfill our mission today and far into the future. I want to thank Ms. Scott for recognizing the importance of our work and for her remarkable generosity. I also want to thank all of our steadfast supporters who, without their generosity, we could not do what we do. Please know, all gifts matter, and together we can change the lives of women and children and provide them with the help and hope they need.”
