Getting Ahead Graduation Celebrates Growth, Goals, and New Futures

On June 10, YWCA North Central Indiana proudly celebrated the graduation of six participants from our Getting Ahead class through the Strengthening Communities program. This milestone marked not just the completion of a course, but the beginning of new pathways toward stability, opportunity, and long-term financial independence.

Throughout the program, participants explored the realities of poverty on both an individual and community level, learning how systems, resources, and “hidden rules” can impact economic mobility. Each graduate reflected deeply on their own experiences, identifying strengths and barriers through their personal “Getting Ahead” journey.

A highlight of the graduation was the presentation of vision boards, where each participant shared their goals, dreams, and future plans. These powerful visuals reflected aspirations for safe and stable housing, financial independence, career growth, and stronger communities.

As part of the program, participants gained practical financial literacy skills, including budgeting, saving, building credit, and understanding banking systems. Graduates now leave with tools and knowledge that support long-term stability, including opportunities to open deposit accounts, build wealth, and strengthen their credit for future homeownership.

The Strengthening Communities program also focuses on employment readiness and self-sufficiency. Participants learned how to complete job applications, highlight their skills, build resumes, and practice interviewing—preparing them to pursue and maintain meaningful employment.

At the heart of this work is a commitment to safe, fair, and affordable housing. Participants explored how to secure stable housing, understand their housing rights, and take steps toward budgeting and preparing for future homeownership. Through one-on-one support with the Economic Empowerment Advocate and Self-Sufficiency Advocate, each graduate developed personalized goals to continue their progress beyond the classroom.

This program offers a supportive environment where participants are encouraged to reflect on their lived experiences, build confidence, and access tools that support both economic and educational growth, along with their overall well-being as they move toward financial stability.

YWCA North Central Indiana celebrates these six graduates for their dedication, resilience, and vision for a better future. Their achievements reflect not only personal growth, but a commitment to strengthening their communities and breaking cycles of poverty for generations to come.

On behalf of YWCA - congratulations, graduates! 🧡
